Why is there such a small field for other races other than the Indy 500

My guess is because of the bigger purse and it's like the Daytona 500 of IndyCar.

Yep.... (message comes up on screen) Hold that thought. Checking my Weatherbug. (checks) Whoa, got some nasty storms heading my way.

Anywho, yeah, basically, everyone tries to qualify for Indy because, 1. It's only the most prestigious race in the world, and 2. The winner usually receives close to 3 million dollars. And teams who actually qualify get at least a quarter-million dollars, even if they finish last.

Well, I would say that the Rolex 24 @ Daytona is the most elite and prestigious race in the world.

uhhh....no.

Le Mans, Sebring, Indy 500, Monaco GP, Daytona 500. All more prestigious than the Rolex 24.

Rolex 24 hasn't been prestigious since the late 90s...and then it still wasn't as prestigious as the above.
