Deefer dominates at Boston; Wins 2nd straight; Altercations Post-Race
Strap in folks, because Tyler Deefer is exploding here in the AMP Energy Racing Series when he most needed to. Sitting outside the top 10 in points following Pikes Peak, Tyler Deefer has since put up a third place finish and now back to back wins to cement himself as a new title contender, sitting third in the championship standings. Not only did he win two in a row, he also took home the Boston sweep, after winning both this race and the second race of the season, the Ford 200, also at Boston.
Deefer’s car was very clearly the best car in the field today. Right from the drop of the green flag he was weaving through traffic. As I recall this race, I really don’t remember him being passed on track even once, which is incredibly impressive. Deefer stayed out long enough to be literally the only car on the lead lap (well, some were tail end but who’s counting?). After a couple yellows and dust-ups, Deefer found himself fending off Barry Juveno and Kody Lachner, eventually seeing him score his 3rd win of 2018, his second straight win in the series, and his second at Boston this season.
After not being able to celebrate last week, Deefer made sure to burn the place down afterwards, and didn’t hold any joy back from the camera. The very fan friendly Deefer was ecstatic in victory lane, way more so than usual and perhaps the most exciting victory lane we’ve seen all year.
“I’m so freakin’ happy man!” shouted Deefer, “You don’t know how blessed I am to be racing with the best in the biz. Let me try to calm myself down here and talk; I’m so lucky, so thankful for every day I have with this team. Everyone from Roger [Renesse] and Fred [Ritcher] all the way down to my crew, my family. Just everyone man. And you know what? We can’t wait to shock the racing world and snatch this title too! WOOO!”.
Deefer has a very good shot at getting his third straight. Since 2014 Deefer has blossomed into quite the road racer. Last year he won at Watkins Glen and dominated at Road America. In 2014 he ran very well at both Willow Point and Pensacola.
Meanwhile, there were a few seperate altercations in the pits. Mike Yuill tried to have a word with Kent Grosso before being hauled to the ground by #66 crew members. Yuill proceeded to make his way back to his garage with minimal bruising.
“It’s my first race and I just went over there to ask him why a vet like him had to do that to a guy making his debut and his guys all just threw a fit and got all protective. It’s whatever man, I had family here and they saw me run 15 miles off the pace today. You know I don’t know when I’ll be back in this series if ever so it sucks to put your all into it and have some guy run ya over.”
There was also an altercation between crew members of the 88 and 29 teams. Allegedly the 29 crew charged Lapinski’s stall and car following the wreck the two were involved in and tried to pull Chad out of his car. Officials quickly defused the scene.
Aaron Parker was in the infield care center and is said to have a minor lower body injury.
All altercations sent crew chiefs and drivers of all parties involved to the AARO hauler.

Juveno falls short of first career win
Despite a valiant challenge to Tyler Deefer and facing pressure from Kody Lachner in the closing stages of the Red Lobster 200, Barry Juveno had to settle for a runner-up finish in his second race with his new team. His night in Seattle was hampered after contact with teammate Mikael Carter that led to a pileup and an 18th-place finish, but he did manage to lead a lap early on. His Boston performance likely continued to turn heads in his direction. Juveno does not have a contract for next season at the moment.
"Great car", Juveno uncharacteristically said to the media surrounding his #9 Amp Energy Dodge Charger with a smile on his face. "Good to be able to run up front n' contend wit da big guns. I feel like I shoulda been doing this a long while ago, but I ain't got da chance to. Makin' engines like they paper meche gon' hurt everybody in the end. Thought I mighta had then damn 20 car, but he just ain't let anyone touch him. I feel a win comin' for us, though."
Juveno passes the injured Bjorn Brewer and Alex Jates in points, moving to the 30th spot with an average finish of 20.6 in the three races since his move to JN Motorsports. He has often been labeled as a troublemaker in the garage who frequently stirs confrontation between himself and his teammates - an enforcer, if you will - and his actions suggest that to be accurate, but perhaps we are seeing a change of heart or mind in the 6'7", 311-lb. 30-year-old (who has visibly made attempts to slim down in the past several months). Scuffles between himself, Deefer and the Silver Green racing team have still occurred (even a war of words between Juveno and former teammate Ross Lowrey!), but it seems that JN's strict attitude of discipline on drivers has been able to tame even one of the wildest characters in the garage area. On or off the track, this is territory that Barry Juveno has never yet been in and it is now or never that he takes advantage of the chances he has.
