AARO remembers Jack Lucas Samson at Darlington
The late Jack Lucas Samson won his final race at the famed Darlington Raceway back in 2010. This weekend, the AERS and AAPT return to the track for the first races since Samson's death shortly after the 2010 season. Drivers, fans and crews all had a church ceremony long after the race events on Friday.
"I remember my last words with him." said Alex Jates, "Crazy to think his spirit is still over this racetrack. I'm obviously gonna do whatever I can to be the next one in the winner circle."
Some drivers, while they disliked Samson, felt sympathy for his family. "Things like this happen to all of us eventually but when it happens like that it's pretty bad. I didn't really like JLS, but I know his siblings and family are all still feeling the pain of him not being here" said Tyler Deefer, "I know the track and series are doing a lot for the family this weekend, and I hope it's memorable."
Darlington Proving Tough
Darlington has always been known as the "track too tough to tame". This weekend, drivers are experiencing why, as in practice, qualifying and even in the Q-Race, drivers had trouble exiting corners without smacking the outside wall.
"It's going to be something we have to deal with" said Keith Davis, "You want to stay off it, but at the same time, there's sometimes nothing you can do, trapped on the outside. It's going to be fun, I'll yell ya' that."
Luke Kinsin, being a rookie, said, "I remember back in AYG, I mastered it pretty quickly. Not so much this weekend, but I'm sure it'll come to me and I know I've got a great car. Not exactly sure what happened in Q, but I'm sure I'll be up there come race time."
